Advantages and disadvantages of road transport

The advantages and disadvantages of road transport are the foundation of knowledge for anyone working in freight transport. Although road transport dominates freight haulage, especially in Poland and across Europe, it is not a solution without limitations. The choice of this mode of transport should result from a calculation of time, costs, and the specifics of the load.
What are the advantages of road transport?
The main advantage of road transport is its flexibility and ability to provide door-to-door deliveries. This means delivering goods directly from the manufacturer’s warehouse to the final recipient, without the need for transshipments required in rail or sea transport.
- Infrastructure availability: A dense road network allows access to almost any geographic location.
- Speed for short and medium distances: Within a radius of up to 2,500 km, road transport is usually unmatched in terms of time.
- Departure frequency: The absence of a fixed schedule (as with trains or ships) allows the loading time to be adjusted to current production needs.
- Ease of monitoring: Thanks to telematics systems or TMS software, the forwarder has constant access to the shipment status and the vehicle’s GPS position in real time.
What are the disadvantages of road transport?
Despite its popularity, road transport generates specific operational risks that can affect the stability of the supply chain.
- Susceptibility to external factors: Traffic jams, road accidents, or adverse weather conditions make it more difficult to guarantee timeliness than in air transport.
- High emissions: Road transport accounts for a significant share of CO2 emissions. In the face of EU regulations (e.g., a toll system based on emission class), the carbon footprint is becoming a real financial cost for companies.
- Weight restrictions: The maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) imposes limits that cannot be exceeded without splitting the load into more transport units.
- Driver working time: Strict regulations regarding breaks and rest periods (Tachograph) limit the daily range of the vehicle with a single driver crew.
Advantages and disadvantages of road transport – comparison with other modes of transport
| Feature | Road Transport | Rail Transport | Sea Freight | Air Freight |
| Reach and flexibility | The highest (door-to-door) | Medium (requires sidings) | Low (seaports) | Average (airports) |
| Payload / Scale | Low (standard 24t) | High (block trains) | The highest (container ships) | Very low (cargo limits) |
| Delivery time | Medium | Medium / Long | The longest | The shortest |
| Unit cost | Medium | Low (for high masses) | Lowest | Highest |
| Security | Medium (road risk) | High | High | The highest |
| Ecology (CO2) | High emission | Low emission | Low emission | Very high emissions |
